Jewish Odessa is a state in state, and the colorful “Odessa language” is recognizable everywhere in the world. At the beginning of the 20th century, Odessa had the 3d largest Jewish population in the world after Warsaw and Prague. Sholom Aleichem, Isaac Babel, Vladimir Zhabotinsky, Mikhail Zhvanetsky, and many other celebrities came from here. The Jewish tradition is still strong today. There are several communities, synagogues, restaurants, and cultural societies in Odessa. Odessa
The main synagogue of Odessa was built in 1850 by F.Morandi. In Soviet times, the Pedagogical Institute was located in the synagogue building. Today it houses the reception office of the Chief Rabbi of Odessa, the Jewish Religious Community, and Odessa Jewish University.
The former Brodsky Synagogue is now the building of the State Archives. In the 19th century, the first reformed choral synagogue was opened here, and for the first time in the Russian Empire an organ was mounted.

The memory of the people who had saved the Jews from the fascist genocide was preserved not only in the Righteous Among the Nations title. To honor them, grateful people of Odessa planted an alley of trees in 2001.
At the beginning of the Alley of the Righteous, there is the Holocaust Memorial which is the first Ukrainian sculpture of Zurab Tsereteli. A memorial sign is at the other end of the Alley.
