Knossos Palace

Knossos is one of the easiest trips from Heraklion. It is an excellent choice for travelers interested in the Minoan period and the early history of Crete. Driving allows us to arrive before the busiest part of the day and continue to another nearby destination afterwards.

A visit to Knossos can be combined with Archanes, local wineries or the countryside south of Heraklion. This makes the route suitable even when we have only one free day.

Archanes and the Cretan countryside

Archanes offers a different experience from the busy coastal resorts. The village has traditional streets, tavernas and easy access to the surrounding countryside. It is a good place for lunch after visiting Knossos.

With a rental car, we can also explore smaller villages nearby instead of following only the main tourist routes. This is one of the main advantages of driving in Crete.

Agia Pelagia

For a short beach trip, Agia Pelagia is an attractive option north west of Heraklion. The sheltered bay is popular for swimming, while restaurants and cafes are located close to the waterfront.

Drivers can also explore nearby beaches during the same trip. Having our own vehicle makes it easier to change plans if one beach is crowded or we simply want to see another part of the coast.

Matala and southern Crete

Matala is one of the most interesting day trips from Heraklion. The drive crosses the island toward the Libyan Sea and passes through agricultural landscapes and traditional settlements.

Matala is known for its beach and caves carved into the cliffs. Travelers can spend several hours by the sea and stay for sunset before driving back. Nearby archaeological locations and villages make it possible to turn the journey into a full day route.

Agios Nikolaos

Driving east from Heraklion brings us to Agios Nikolaos, a lively coastal town that works well for a relaxed day trip. Visitors can walk around the waterfront, stop for lunch and explore beaches along the eastern coast.

Travelers who start early can continue toward Elounda and the coast opposite Spinalonga. A car is particularly useful on this route because several interesting stops can be visited during the same day.

Rethymno

Rethymno is a good choice for travelers who enjoy historic streets, waterfront restaurants and Venetian architecture. The drive from Heraklion follows the northern coast and can be combined with beach stops along the way.

Instead of planning the day around bus departures, we can decide how long to stay in the old town and stop at coastal villages during the return journey.

Choosing a rental car in Heraklion

Before booking, we recommend comparing the total rental conditions rather than looking only at the daily price. Deposit requirements, insurance, mileage policy, payment methods and additional driver conditions can change the real cost of a booking.

Travelers who want to compare offers from international and local rental companies can check RosCar Greece. Selected options allow customers to rent a car without a deposit and without a credit card. Insurance and full coverage options are also available depending on the selected offer.

Useful features to check before booking

  • Car rental with no deposit
  • Car rental without a credit card
  • Insurance and full coverage options
  • Prices from international and local rental companies
  • Mileage limits or unlimited mileage
  • Airport or city pickup conditions
  • Additional driver terms

How to plan a road trip from Heraklion

We recommend choosing two or three stops that are located in the same direction. This reduces unnecessary driving and gives us more time at each destination.

  • Start early when visiting popular archaeological sites.
  • Keep water in the car during summer trips.
  • Check parking options before entering historic town centers.
  • Choose a smaller car if the route includes narrow village streets.
  • Read the fuel and mileage conditions before collecting the vehicle.
  • Allow extra driving time on mountain and rural roads.

Suggested one day routes from Heraklion

For history and local food, we can drive from Heraklion to Knossos and continue to Archanes. For a beach day, Agia Pelagia offers a much shorter route. Matala works well for travelers who want to cross central Crete and reach the southern coast.

Those interested in towns and coastal scenery can choose Agios Nikolaos to the east or Rethymno to the west. Both routes provide opportunities for additional stops, which is why renting a car can be especially useful when exploring Crete from Heraklion.
